People of Integrity: A Matthew 23 Heart Check
People of Integrity Start With a Heart Check
I’ve been meditating on Matthew 23:27-28 as a way to have an internal heart check.
Jesus says, “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean. In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.”
The language is bold. When I sit with it, I don’t want to aim it across the room first. I want to ask whether I am becoming a person whose outside is cleaner than the inside.
If you lead worship, pastor people, or serve as a Church Musician, you already know how easy it is to look ready. The character in this story is us — people who love Jesus and still need searching. The problem is not that Sunday should be sloppy. The problem is an outside that appears righteous while the inside is full of things that cannot bear fruit.
Whitewashed tombs are a warning, not a costume to study
Matthew 23:27 is a great lense to use to search ourselves. Are my actions on the outside a reflection of what’s really happening on the inside? I want to speak life and encourage others the way Jesus instructs us to. I do not want a polished presence and an inner life that is quietly dead.
People of integrity are not people who never struggle. They are people who refuse to pretend. Alive on the inside matters more than looking holy in the hallway or on stage.
Stay close to Jesus — love, pruning, fruit
The inner life we want is not a better performance. It is produced from proximity. Stay close to Jesus through his Holy Spirit & Word. Let Him love you. Let Him prune what does not belong. Let Him grow fruit that brings us nearer to Him — and nearer to one another.
Integrity of heart will show up on and off the stage. Likewise, excellent Sunday systems can serve the gathering. They are also great white washers. BE CAREFUL and lead out of your relationship with Jesus.
Build better culture from the inside out
May we be people of integrity — not just appearing righteous on the outside, but alive on the inside.
Worship Support Network exists to walk with teams who want that kind of culture. Read who we are, our core values, how we serve churches, or start a profile. Worship Support Network’s app makes filling gaps in worship and tech teams easy when a chair is empty. The deeper invitation is still the same: come close to Jesus.
